Suspected terrorists shot youth in J&K

Suspected militants shot dead a youngster in Tral sub-district of south Kashmir a day after three militants were killed in a fierce gun-battle in the same area. This is the first civilian death in 2019 in the continued cycle of violence in Kashmir. The slain youngster was brother of a sarpanch who was elected unopposed during recently held village level polls in the embattled state.
Sources said that unidentified assailants shot at an injured 30-year-old Simranjit Singh when he was walking on a dirt track between Diver and Khasipora villages in Tral, around 44 kilometers from here. The assailants fled away after leaving Singh in a poll of blood. However, he managed to call his relatives on phone who immediately shifted him to local hospital. He was later referred to Srinagar where he succumbed to injuries on Friday afternoon.
Singh’s elder brother Rajinder Singh was elected sarpanch of Khasipora village inn December last after he filed his nomination papers. He was elected unopposed as no other candidate filed nominations due to threats issued by militants. Sources said Rajinder, who had previously been associated with the Congress, had also announced to withdraw his nomination.
No militant group claimed responsibility for the attack.
