Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded the Order of Zayed, the UAE's highest civilian honor. He is the first Indian Prime Minister to receive this honor. This honor is given to heads of nations and presidents. The award has been awarded to President Putin of Russia in 2007, Queen Elizabeth in 2016, and Chinese President Xi Chinfing in 2018. Prime Minister Modi has visited UAE twice as Prime Minister, while Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed has also visited India twice in three years.


The Foreign Ministry said in a statement prior to his visit, "The award is named after UAE founder Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The PM also met Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the UAE. PM Modi told a media group that relations between India and the UAE have steadily strengthened. Giving the example of Dubai, he said that lakhs of Indians contributed to build this city and are living a respectable life here today.
