The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed CBI in the INX Media case that former Union Minister P. Chidambaram will continue in CBI custody till September 5.
Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal assured bench that led by Justice R. Banumathi and A S Bopanna that they would not press for interim bail at a hearing scheduled later in the afternoon before the trial court in P. Chidambaram case.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, at the very commencement of the hearing, informed the Bench that the 15-day remand would continue till September 5 and said the plea could be heard on same day. The apex court order on a separate petition filed by Mr. Chidambaram for protection from arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is also scheduled to be pronounced on September 5.
The bench listed the matter for September 5 and said, "We are conscious that we should not take away the jurisdiction of the lower court concerned".
At the same time, former finance minister P Chidambaram, who was arrested in INX Media case on Monday, got partial relief from the Supreme Court on Monday when the apex court said that he will not be sent to Tihar Jail in this case for the time being. Earlier, Chidambaram offered to detain him at home instead of sending him to Tihar Jail.
