Goa government cancels Shigmo festival due to rise in Covid-19 cases

The Goa state government has declared that the state's much-anticipated Shigmo festival parade will not take place this year due to the rise in Covid-19 cases.

According to Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, the decision to cancel the parades was made to prevent the spread of corona virus.

"Artists who participate in the annual Shigmotsov festivities will be compensated by the state government. The decision to cancel the Shigmo parades in the state was made to prevent the Covid-19 from spreading further", Sawant said while answering the issue raised by MGP MLA Sudin Dhavalikar in the state legislative assembly session.

For the past 30 years, the Shigmo festival parade has been showcasing Odisha's folk art. It was held last year despite coronavirus concerns.

Sawant also advised people not to celebrate Holi on a wide scale, but rather to keep it to their own communities.
