A man was arrested after he opened fire, police found, and was charged with an acid attack

A woman was hospitalized with burns after being attacked by her ex-lover, who was arrested by police here after a shootout Friday, officials said.
The shootout, in which the accused sustained bullet injuries, took place within 16 hours of the acid attack, officials said.

"Accused Vikas, who is in his early 20s, threw acid (battery water) on the woman near a hotel in Mamura area on Thursday night and fled from the spot. The woman with burn injuries was taken to a local hospital but was soon shifted to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, where he is being treated," a police spokeswoman said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Noida) Harish Chander said a team of the Phase 3 police station was in the Sector 68 area on Friday morning when they spotted a suspicious-looking man on a motorcycle. "When he saw the police team, he tried to escape and opened fire on the police team. During the retaliatory firing by the police, he was hit in the leg and was taken to the hospital for treatment," said a police officer.

He was later found linked to the Thursday night acid attack case. The accused claimed that he was married to the woman and they stayed together in Mumbai for three years but now she got into a relationship with another person.

"He said he was frustrated with this and that's why he planned the attack on the woman. His claim of marrying the woman is being checked and his criminal record is also being checked," said a senior police officer.

An FIR under Section 326A of the Indian Penal Code (acid attack) has been lodged against Vikas, a native of UP's Badaun district, and further legal proceedings are underway, police said.
