Fact-Checker M Zubair seeks urgent Supreme Court hearing on UP cases!

Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair on Monday sought an urgent listing of his plea from the Supreme Court seeking quashing of FIRs lodged against him in several districts of Uttar Pradesh for allegedly inciting religious sentiments.
A bench headed by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana took note of the submissions of Mohammed Zubair's counsel Vrinda Grover that the petitioner, a fact-checker and journalist, was facing a slew of FIRs and his application needed an urgent hearing.

“I will list it before Justice DY Chandrachud. You can mention in front of that bench,” said the bench. Mohammed Zubair's fresh plea also challenged the constitution of a special investigation team (SIT) by the Uttar Pradesh government to probe the six cases.

The plea says that all the six FIRs filed in Uttar Pradesh, which have been handed over to the SIT for investigation, are the subject of the FIR being investigated by the Delhi Police's special cell.

Separate FIRs were lodged in Sitapur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Ghaziabad, Muzaffarnagar and Hathras districts on charges of allegedly hurting religious sentiments, making sarcastic remarks on news anchors, disrespecting Hindu gods and making inflammatory posts.
