Odisha girl jumps from roof of school building to escape rape, Critical: Cops

A girl sustained serious injuries after she jumped from the roof of a school building in Odisha's Jajpur district while trying to escape an attempted rape by five men, police said.
The five accused, who advised the girl and her brother to take shelter in the school as it was raining heavily, have been arrested, a senior officer said.

The girl was admitted to a hospital in Kalinga Nagar in a serious condition, he said on Monday.

The incident took place on Sunday evening when the girl, a resident of Orissa's Keonjhar district, was going to her sister's house along with her brother.

When they got off the bus, it was raining heavily in the area and the group of men suggested that they could stay in the school building and head to their destination when the rain stopped, to which they agreed.

However, the five men returned later that night, beat the brother and allegedly drove him away. When they tried to rape the girl, she ran to the roof of the school building and jumped from there, injuring herself severely, the police said.

Local residents heard her brother's cry for help, reached the spot and alerted the police.

The police arrived in the village, rescued the girl and took her to the hospital.

Kalinga Nagar Police Station Superintendent PB Rout said, "Based on the statement of the victim's brother, all five people have been detained. The interrogation is on."
