Shimla: Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, MLA from Nadaun assembly constituency of Himachal Pradesh and chairman of the Congress election campaign committee, will be the chief minister of the state. Sukhwinder, who became MLA for the fourth time, will take oath as Chief Minister on 11 December.
Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, who belongs to Sera village of Nadaun tehsil of Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh, was born on 26 March 1964.
Born in an ordinary family, Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu's father Rasil Singh was a driver in the Himachal Road Transport Corporation, Shimla.
His supporter Sunil Kashyap, who came from Nadaun assembly constituency, says that Sukhu comes from a simple family.
His specialty is that he takes care of everyone. It was because of him that the Congress performed so well in Hamirpur, Una and Kangra districts of Lower Himachal. He is a popular leader.
Was state president of YC for 10 years: Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu had strengthened his hold in student politics so much that from 1998 to 2008, he was the State President of Youth Congress for ten consecutive years. During his political career, he also became the councilor of Shimla Municipal Corporation twice.
Was elected MLA in 2003: But his goal was bigger. So in 2003, he contested his first assembly election and he reached the Himachal Pradesh assembly for the first time.
After this, he was elected MLA for the fourth time in 2007, 2017 and now in 2022 from Nadaun assembly constituency. Meanwhile, in 2008, he became the General Secretary of the State Congress.
Lost election in 2012: He got his first defeat in the assembly elections in the year 2012 but he was not broken by it. He took over as the President of Himachal Pradesh Congress on 8 January 2013.
Confronted CM and his own govt: During this, he kept on directly confronting his government and Congress's six-time Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh on different issues.
Strengthened party organisation: He was the President of the State Congress for almost six years. During this he kept on strengthening the organization.
During his tenure as the state Congress chief, he strengthened the organisation and his rapport with workers and legislators made him a strong contender for the chief minister's post
Stepped down from post of State President: But after the defeat of the Congress in the elections of 2017-18, on January 10, 2019, he stepped down from the post of President.
Got big responsibility just before election: Just before the 2022 assembly elections, the Congress gave him a big responsibility in April 2022 by making him the chairman of the Himachal Pradesh Congress Election Campaign Committee and a member of the ticket distribution committee.
After the Congress won the elections in Himachal Pradesh, when the discussion about the Chief Minister intensified, he remained in the race from the beginning and after a long consultation with the central observers, which lasted for about 48 hours, the party decided to make him the Chief Minister.
First Congress leader from Lower Himachal to become CM: Sukhu will be the first Congress leader from Lower Himachal -- comprising areas merged in Himachal in 1966 such as Nalagarh, Una, Hamirpur, Kangra and lower hills of Kullu -- to occupy the top post.
He will be the second chief minister from Hamirpur district, after BJP's Prem Kumar Dhumal
