Hockey World Cup: India Out Of Medal Race, Lose To NZ In Must Win Match


India is out of medal race in the Hockey World Cup. In Sunday's crossover tie, New Zealand beat India 5-4 in the penalty shootout. Earlier, both the teams were tied at 3-3 till the stipulated time.

India lost to New Zealand in the must-win crossover match at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar on Sunday.
The teams played out a 3-3 draw at full-time, taking the match into the shootout. India and New Zealand were tied at 3-3 in the shootout as the match entered sudden death, where New Zealand booked their spot in the quarter-finals with a 5-4 win over India.

India scored through Lalit Upadhyay (17th minute), Sukhjeet Singh (24th) and Varun Kumar (40th).

New Zealand replied through Sam Lane (28th) and two penalty-corner conversions by Kane Russell (43rd) and Sean Findlay (49th). 

In the opening quarter, the New Zealand captain faced a two-minute suspension as he got a green card for tackling India's Abhishek. Lalit Kumar Upadhyay finally handed India an advantage in the second quarter as he cleared an easy goal in the left corner.
New Zealand will now take on reigning world champions Belgium in the quarter-finals.
