Jharkhand Fire: 14 Die As Fire Engulfs Multi-Storey Building In Dhanbad

Dhanbad (Jharkhand): At least 14 people, including 10 women and 3 children, were charred to death and many others were injured when a massive fire broke out in a multi-storey building in Jharkhand's Dhanbad on Tuesday. Many people were trapped in the building.

A major fire broke out at the 13-storey Ashirwad Twin Tower located in Dhanbad's Joraphatak in Jharkhand. More than 24 injured have been admitted to the hospital.

The fire probably started when an earthen lamp fell. Then a gas cylinder blasted. More than 20 fire brigades extinguished the fire.

Fire spread from one flat to another

The fire broke out on the third floor at 6.30 pm on Tuesday. In no time it spread from one flat to another and then up to 5th floors. The flames were so strong that the bodies were unrecognizable due to scorching. Some bodies are stuck to each other. The dead include 10 women, three children and an elderly person.

Resident Subodh Lal's flat is on the fourth floor. His daughter's marriage was on this day. The women and children in the house were about to get ready and leave. But they were engulfed in flames. They were running here and there in a frenzy. Most of the deaths have happened on the fourth floor itself.

Rescue workers also suffered burn injuries

The fire was so severe that some rescue workers have also suffered burn injuries. While rescuing the people, PK Singh, in-charge of Bank Modh police station, also got burnt. He has been admitted to a local nursing home for treatment.

According to people, Pankaj Aggarwal's flat is on the second floor of the apartment. In the evening the lamp was lit during the Mahila Puja in the flat. A child dropped the lamp. The carpet spread below caught fire.

The fire quickly spread to the third and fourth floor flats. The cylinders kept in the flats got blasted. This fueled the fire.

CM expresses grief

Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren has expressed grief. He tweeted: The death of people due to fire in Dhanbad's Ashirwad Tower Apartment is extremely heart-wrenching. The district administration is working on a war footing and treatment is being provided to those injured in the accident. I am looking into the whole matter myself.
