Bhopal: Santi and Sandhya, who compete with each other in cycling, are best friends and together they want to represent India in the Olympics in track cycling
Track cycling rivals Santi Biswas from West Bengal and Sandhya Venkatesh Kokate from Maharashtra are close friends in personal life. Their rivalry and friendship during the Khelo India Youth Games 2022 was heartwarming.
The Cycling Velodrome witnessed the rivalry between Santi and Sandhya during the track cycling events of the Khelo India Youth Games 2022 held at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Delhi from February 2 to 4.
Sandhya won gold in the 500 meter time trial race, while Shanti had to settle for silver. In the 200 meter sprint, Shanti won the gold while Sandhya won the silver.
Even in the thrilling contest of Keirin race, Shanti captured gold with a lead of few milliseconds and Sandhya once again got silver.
Sandhya won 2 gold and a silver medal on the track in various formats of events during the Games, while Shanti earned 2 gold and a silver.
Danced in unison to celebrate victory
On the contrary, Shanti and Sandhya's close friendship and liveliness in the FOP area of Velodrome won everyone's heart. Both the players were seen warming-up by cycling together in the FOP area. After every medal ceremony, both the friends danced in unison to celebrate victory.
They are roommates and train together
Both the players are also roommates in Delhi and train together under the Sports Authority of India. Both have kept the same hair-style.
Everyone takes them for twin sister
Apart from behaviour, both are such a reflection of each other in stature. At first glance everyone takes them for twin sisters.
Sandhya's mother considers Santi as her daughter too. Both study in class XII and both used to be athletes before taking up cycling.
Aim to represent India in international events
Khelo India Youth Games 2022 was the last competition of Santi and Sandhya's junior career. Playing at the senior level, both the friends aim to represent India in the Olympics and other international events in track cycling.
It is the dream of both of them to win a medal for the country. Glimpses of their on-track rivalry and off-track friendship would continue to be seen throughout their careers.
