Mohali (Punjab): Protesters demanding the release of Sikh prisoners turned violent on Wednesday in Punjab's Mohali on border with Chandigarh. The protesters under the banner of the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha wanted to go to the chief minister's residence to press for their demands.
They sought the release of Sikh prisoners who they claim are lodged in different prisons although they have completed their sentences.
During this there was a lot of stone pelting. The protesters took out swords. Seeing this, the police lathi-charged and also used water cannon.
Protesters vandalized police vehicles
Enraged by this, the protesters vandalized the vehicles of Chandigarh and Punjab Police. The protestors chased away the police by showing swords and sticks.
Some policemen were also injured in this violent incident. Some protesters have been detained.
Section 144 imposed
Seeing the deteriorating atmosphere, senior police officers reached the spot. Section 144 has been imposed in Chandigarh. Protesters are still gathering in Mohali. At the same time, Chandigarh Police is also on high alert.
People from different parts of Punjab have been staging a protest at the YPS Chowk near the Chandigarh-Mohali border since January 7.
Later, more protesters carrying swords and sticks assembled at the site of protest. Some Nihangs turned violent and thrashed some of the police personnel.
Protesters announced march to CM House
On Wednesday, the protesters announced march to the house of the CM of Punjab. As soon as this was known, the Chandigarh and Punjab police barricaded.
The protesters came near the barricading. They tried to remove the barricade, but were stopped by the police. After this they took out the swords and the sticks. Pushing the police back, they tried to enter Chandigarh. Seeing this, the police resorted to lathicharge.
Police release video
Chandigarh Police has released a video after the lathicharge. In which Nihangs are seen targeting police vehicles on Mohali border.
In the video, they are seen breaking vehicles with swords. Some Chandigarh Police personnel were injured in this incident. They have been admitted to Sector 16 Hospital in Chandigarh.
Chandigarh DGP Praveer Ranjan has also left for the hospital as soon as he came to know about the injuries of the policemen.

The DGP said that many protesters were carrying weapons and sticks, rods. Many other dangerous weapons were also with them. The protesters attacked the policemen when stopped. Many policemen have been injured. Some of the protestors came on horseback, including contingents of Nihangs. They also had weapons. Policemen were attacked with swords. Some policemen have received serious injuries.
The protesters are also seeking justice in the 2015 sacrilege and police-firing incidents in Faridkot.For the last two days, the protesters have been trying to go to Chandigarh but were detained by the police.Nihangs, members of several Sikh bodies and others are supporting the demands of the morcha.
The protesters have also been seeking the release of Sikh prisoners including Balwant Singh Rajoana, a convict in former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh's assassination. They also want the release of Devinderpal Singh Bhullar, a 1993 Delhi bomb blast convict.
