New Delhi: Wrestlers have been protesting at Delhi's Jantar Mantar for the past several days. They demand that BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accused of sexual exploitation, should be immediately arrested. It was also planed to organise a Mahila Mahapanchayat in front of the new Parliament House. In which wrestlers were also to participate. Mahila Mahapanchayat is being organized without permission, so the police were not allowing anyone to participate in it. But the wrestlers were adamant on joining the Mahapanchayat.
When the police came to know about this, they started to surround the wrestlers and warned them not to participate in the Mahapanchayat. But even after this the protesting wrestlers left to join the Mahapanchayat. The police laid siege from all sides and put up barricades, which the wrestlers tried to cross.
Jantar Mantar vacated
Wrestlers remained adamant and marched to participate in Mahapanchayat. They were detained by the police and did not a11ow them to move forward. There are media reports that the police misbehaved with the wrestlers although police claimed they used minimum force. Police also vacated Jantar Mantar and removed the tents.
Meanwhile, there was a clash between the police and the wrestlers and the police took several wrestlers into custody. Angered by this attitude of the police, wrestler Bajrang Punia said is this a democracy, we are protesting peacefully and we are being treated like this. Shoot us, he said. Punia said that Sakshi Malik had also been taken into custody.
Police sealed the border
Farmers from many states including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab were coming to participate in Mahila Mahapanchayat. To stop them, the police first closed the roads by putting barricades on the Singhu, Tikri border. Apart from this, the entry and exit gates of two metro stations of Delhi were also closed. To avoid any untoward situation, the police made a school a temporary jail.
Arrests made at many places
On Sunday, the inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament House was going on and on the other side the police started arresting the supporters of the wrestlers. The Haryana police laid siege to the farmers and women representatives and took them into custody. Those detained included Khap representatives and farmer leaders of Hisar, Sonipat, Panipat, Rohtak, Jind and Ambala.
There are reports of clashes between the farmers and the police in Ambala as well. According to media reports, police have detained some women in Rohtak's Sampla. And many leaders have been put under house arrest. Police force has been deployed at all the toll plazas of Haryana. Those who are going towards Mahapanchayat are being taken into custody by the police.
