Veteran Actress Sulochana Latkar Famous For Her Depiction Of Mother Characters Passes Away



Celebrated actress Sulochana Latkar, known for her enchanting performances in Hindi and Marathi cinema, passed away at 94 due to an age-related illness. Sulochana was especially popular for her depiction of warm and affectionate mother characters. She was feted with several top state and national awards, including the prestigious Padma Shri in 1999. Her last rites will be performed on Monday at 5 pm at Shivaji Park Crematorium, Dadar.


Sulochana’s granddaughter Rashmi Ghanekar confirmed the news of her demise Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the film industry had lost a motherly figure. He announced she will be cremated with state honours.

Sulochana leaves behind over 250 Hindi and 50 Marathi films to her credit. Sulochana played mother or mother figure to top heroes from Dev Anand and Dilip Kumar to Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan. She left an ineradicable mark with her fine performances in movies such as Johny Mera Naam, Kasauti, Sujata, Kati Patang, and Muqqadar Ka Sikandar. On Bachchan’s 75th birthday, she sent him a handwritten letter, which he shared on social media.


Sulochana was most known for her performances in Marathi films such as Sasurvas (1946), Vahinichya Bangdya (1953), Meeth Bhakar, Sangtye Aika (1959) and Dhakti Jau in the lead roles, as well as for the mother roles she played in Hindi cinema. She and Nirupa Roy epitomized the "mother" roles right from 1959 until the early 1990s.


Usha Nadkarni pays homage to Sulochana


Veteran Hindi and Marathi cinema and television actress Usha Nadkarni was overcome with grief while talking about Sulochana. 


“Sulochana Didi lived every role,” she said. “She was so strong that I really believed she would live to be 100, and we would have a big celebration on her centenary. I first worked with her in the Marathi serial Chawal Navachi Vachal Vasti, and it was a learning experience for me. I offer my heartfelt tribute to her."


PM Modi condoles demise of Sulochana


The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has expressed deep grief over the demise of veteran actress, Sulochana and said that her cinematic legacy will live on through her works.

The Prime Minister tweeted: “The passing of Sulochana Ji leaves a big void in the world of Indian cinema. Her unforgettable performances have enriched our culture and have endeared her to people across generations. Her cinematic legacy will live on through her works. Condolences to her family. Om Shanti.”
