Katihar: Big news is coming from Barsoi sub division of Katihar district. Here the police opened fire on the people protesting against the irregular power supply. Locals said three people died in the firing but the police have confirmed the death of only one person.
A large number of villagers and locals were protesting in the Barsoi block office premises of the electricity department on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the people who were protesting suddenly became agitated. They attacked the office of the Electricity Department and started pelting stones at the police
To control the angry people, the police fired in the air and lathi-charged the mob. After this the people became more agitated. Police opened fire to control the mob.
Three people reportedly received gunshot wound during the police firing to disperse the crowd. Locals claimed five people were injured in firing and three of them have died, but Barsoi sub-division DSP has confirmed the death of one person.
Of the three people who have received gunshot wounds, the police has confirmed the death of Khurshid Alam (34 years), a resident of Basal village. Apart from this, Niyaz Alam (32 years) of Chapakhod Panchayat and another person sustained gun shot injuries. Villagers say that many people were also injured in the lathicharge.
Police said the people pelted stones at the police. After the incident, there is tension in the entire area and senior officials have left for the spot.
Villages say 5 injured in firing
Local villagers say that around 3 o'clock they had gone to protest against the electricity department. Meanwhile, the police started firing on them. They allege that 5 people were shot, out of which three people died.
It is said that the power supply was disrupted from 5 am to 11 am due to maintenance work. Enraged by this, people blocked the main road near Bastol Chowk and Barsoi block headquarters of Pranpu.
