Madurai: Punalur Madurai Express going from Khanu to Rameswaram caught fire at Madurai railway station in Tamil Nadu. In this horrific accident, 9 people were burnt to dath. At the same time, more than 20 people were injured. Most of the dead are residents of Uttar Pradesh.
The information about the fire incident was received at 5.15 am. The train was standing at Madurai Yard Junction at the time of the accident. That's why the fire started.
Blast occurred when passengers lit gas stove to make coffee
MS Sangeetha, Madurai District Collector, said, "Today early morning at 5:30 am there was a fire accident in the coach which was halted here at Madurai railway station...They were pilgrims & were travelling from Uttar Pradesh. This morning when they tried to make coffee & tried to lit the gas stove, there was a cylinder blast. 55 people have been rescued & as of now, we have retrieved nine bodies...Rescue operation is underway...,"
Passengers were illegally smuggling gas cylinders
In this case, the Southern Railway has said that the passengers illegally smuggled gas cylinders in the private party coach of the train. Because of which the train caught fire. More than 20 people have been injured. They have been admitted to Government Rajaji College, Madurai for treatment.

During this, the coach of the train is seen burning badly. Fierce flames are seen coming out of the coach. The sound of some people shouting is also heard nearby.

After getting the information after the accident, the employees of the fire department reached the spot and somehow controlled the fire after a lot of effort. Many passengers got out of the coach as soon as the fire was reported. While some passengers got down on the platform itself.
Gas cylinders were being smuggled in private coaches
Southern Railway said that even after the ban, the passengers were carrying gas cylinders illegally. The coach which caught fire was a private coach. This is a private party coach. Which was added a day earlier at Nagercoil Junction. The party coach has been isolated and kept on the Madurai stabling line. Any person can book a party coach through the IRCTC portal. But they are also not allowed to carry any inflammable material like gas cylinders.
