Sagar: The Congress will conduct a caste census in Madhya Pradesh after winning the assembly polls in the state, said party president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday.
He was addressing a public rally in Sagar in MP's Bundelkhand region.
As per the 2011 Census, the population of Dalits in MP was 1.13 crore.
Bundelkhand, in north east MP, has six assembly seats reserved for SCs (out of total 26) , and the BJP had won five of them in the 2018 state polls, namely Bina, Naryoli, Jatara, Chandala and Hatta, while the Congress managed to get Gunnor.
Bundelkhand comprises Sagar, Chattarpur, Tikamgarh, Nimari, Damoh and Panna districts, with tital 26 Assembly seats, of which 15 were won by the BJP in the last state polls, while the Congress got nine and and one each was won by Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party.
Bundelkhand package not implemented
Kharge said the BJP government has not implemented the Bundelkhand package sanctioned on the recommendation of senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, said Kharge.
The Congress president criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of not doing anything for violence-hit Manipur.
PM remembered Ravidas only during elections
Referring to the laying of the foundation stone of a Rs 100 crore memorial-cum-temple of Sant Ravidas, a revered figure for Scheduled Castes, by PM Modi earlier this month, Kharge said they laid the foundation of Saint Ravidas temple in Sagar but demolished his temple in Delhi.
Kharge alleged that PM Modi remembered Saint Ravidas only during elections.
Cong preserved Constitution
In a strong reply to Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking Congress' report card of 53 years, AICC president national president Mallikarjun Kharge said the party preserved the democracy.
"Congress preserved the democracy in India. We preserved the constitution unlike you. It's because of Congress that elections are still being held and it's because of Congress' democratic values that Modi, Shah and Chouhan are in power."
Kharge said Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has ruled Madhya Pradesh for 15 years and the state is still the most backward.
Cong built colleges to impart advanced education
While Congress has generated employment in state, built colleges to impart advanced education to youths. Listing Congress' works in Madhya Pradesh, Kharge said, "tell Amit Shah, Congress built IIM-Indore, IIT-Indore, AIIMS-Bhopal, Bhilai Steel Plant in erstwhile undivided MP, Chambal Ghati Project, Indira Sagar Dam and Rani Lakshmi Bai College in Gwalior, among others.
BJP toppled democratically elected Nath-govt
Kharge said the saffron party toppled the democratically elected Nath-government in 2020 in Madhya Pradesh. "BJP government in Madhya Pradesh is illegal. They stole our MLAs and create divide among the people."
On Siddhi pee-gate incident, where BJP leader Pravesh Shukla urinated on a tribal man's face, Kharge said CM Shivraj washed the feet of the tribal victim to compensate. "But, will washing his feet cleanse the urine that went inside his body?" he asked.
He further accused the ruling BJP government in Madhya Pradesh of charging 50% commission from contractors and the public to get the work done.
