Sumit Nagal creates history, stuns Alexander Bublik in first round of Australian Open 2024

Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal has made it to the second round of Australian Open for the first time by defeating world number 27 player Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan.

In the year 2021, Nagal got a wild card entry in the first round of Australian Open, but then he lost.

Sumit Nagal defeated Bublik 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 in the first round of the tournament. This is being considered a big upset in the world of tennis.

The world number 139 Indian player will play in the second round of a Grand Slam event for the second time. Earlier, he had reached the second round of US Open.

In the year 2020, Nagal lost to Dominic Thiem 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 in the US Open.

First Indian male player to defeat a seeded opponent since Ramesh Krishnan

This triumph etched Nagal's name in history as the first Indian male player to defeat a seeded opponent in the singles draw since Ramesh Krishnan achieved the feat in 1989. Particularly impressive was Nagal's ability to establish a commanding lead early on, clinching back-to-back set victories against the 27th-ranked Bublik.

It's noteworthy that Nagal did not receive a wildcard nomination, earning his place in the main draw through triumphs in three challenging qualifying matches. To eliminate the 31st-ranked player in the world in the opening round is a truly remarkable achievement for Nagal.
