Swachh Survekshan 2023: Indore adjudged India's cleanest city for 7th time in a row jointly with Surat; Maharashtra cleanest state; Varanasi cleanest city situated on banks of Ganga


The central government released the results of Swachh Survekshan 2023 on Thursday. Indore stood first for the seventh time among cities with population of more than one lakh. Surat also got the first position jointly with Indore. Navi Mumbai of Maharashtra was at third place, Visakhapatnam of Andhra Pradesh was at fourth place and Bhopal of Madhya Pradesh was at fifth place.


Saswad of Maharashtra cleanest among cities with population less than one lakh


Among the cities with population less than one lakh, Saswad of Maharashtra stood first, Patan of Chhattisgarh stood second and Lonavala of Maharashtra stood third. This time, in the category of clean states of the country, Maharashtra got first place, Madhya Pradesh got second place and Chhattisgarh got third place. Last time Madhya Pradesh was at first position.


Varanasi and Prayagraj cleanest cities situated on banks of Ganga


Among the cleanest cities situated on the banks of Ganga, Varanasi stood first and Prayagraj stood second. Apart from this, Mhow of Madhya Pradesh has received the award of the cleanest Cantonment Board. The Best Safai Mitra Safe City Award was given to Chandigarh.


President Droupadi Murmu and Union Urban Development Minister Hardeep Puri honored the representatives of these states in the program organized at Bharat Mandapam Convention Center in Delhi. This time a total survey of 9500 marks has been given. In this, 4525 marks were given on service level progress, 2500 marks on certification and 2475 marks on public feedback.



Madhya Pradesh was cleanest state in 2022 survey


In 2022, Madhya Pradesh had become the cleanest state in the country by defeating Rajasthan-Maharashtra. Madhya Pradesh came at number-1 among the states with more than 100 cities. Bhopal also moved from seventh to sixth ranking. Bhopal was the second cleanest city in the country in 2017 and 2018.


In the year 2016 there were only 73 cities. Even then Indore was at number-1. Now 4355 cities were involved in this race. Still Indore achieved the title of number-1. Indore has been coming at number-1 in the country since the year 2017. Madhya Pradesh had received a total of 27 honors in the Cleanliness Survey-2020. In this, 18 cities were for star rating and 9 cities were for Swachh Survekshan. Whereas, a total of 35 awards were given in the 2021 survey.


Patan of Chhattisgarh stood second in terms of cleanliness among cities with population less than 1 lakh. State Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai, Deputy CM Arun Saw received the honor from the President.


Waste to Wealth


The Sanitation Survey of India is the world's largest urban sanitation survey. It was started in 2016 to maintain cleanliness in cities. This time the theme of the survey was kept from Waste to Wealth. Under the 8th season of cleanliness survey, more than 4500 cities were kept in the list in 2023.


From July 1, 3 thousand employees were assigned the task of evaluating cleanliness in these cities. Cities were assessed on 46 parameters. The target was to take feedback from about 10 crore citizens.


Ranking Parameters for Urban Sanitation Survey


The cleanliness survey uses several parameters to rank clean and dirt-free cities. This includes everything from door-to-door garbage collection to plastic waste management. This time, Safaimitra safety was given priority by emphasizing on converting 'manhole' into 'machine hole'. For this, double marks were increased.


New parameter Waste to Wonder Park


A new parameter Waste to Wonder Park was also added. Cities that fulfilled this parameter were given 2% weightage in the numbers. 40% weightage was given to how much garbage generated from cities is being used with the help of technology. Apart from this, Red Spot (spitting in commercial/residential areas) was also added as a new parameter.
