CAA Notification Expected Soon, Granting Citizenship to Non-Muslim Refugees from Neighboring Countries

New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs is anticipated to release the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) notification next month, possibly preceding the announcement of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This move is expected to pave the way for non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan to acquire Indian citizenship.

According to media reports, the online portal for CAA registration has been prepared, and a trial run has already been conducted by the Union Home Ministry. The CAA is designed to assist refugees from neighboring countries who lack proper documentation. Notably, the ministry has received a significant number of long-term visa applications, particularly from Pakistan.

Home Minister Amit Shah, in statements made twice within the last two months, affirmed that the implementation of CAA will occur before the Lok Sabha elections. Emphasizing it as a lawful process, Shah stated that the Parliament had approved the CAA on December 11, 2019. However, the government has extended the deadline for formulating rules and regulations to implement this legislation on eight occasions.
