India's External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, has engaged in discussions with his Iranian and Israeli counterparts regarding the escalating situation in West Asia. This conversation occurred nearly a day following Iran's assault on Israel.
During his call with Iran's Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Jaishankar also addressed the issue of the release of 17 Indian crew members from a cargo ship seized by the Iranian military on Saturday.
"Spoke to Iranian FM. Took up the release of 17 Indian crew members of MSC Aries. Discussed the current situation in the region. Stressed the importance of avoiding escalation, exercising restraint and returning to diplomacy. Agreed to remain in touch," Jaishankar said on X.
In a separate post, he said, "Just concluded a conversation with Israel FM Israel Katz. Shared our concern at the developments yesterday. Discussed the larger regional situation. Agreed to stay in touch."
Iran initiated an unprecedented attack on Israel late Saturday, deploying over 300 drones and missiles, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing covert war between the two regional adversaries.
The Israeli military reported a 99 percent interception rate, successfully neutralizing 170 drones and 30 cruise missiles before they could reach Israeli territory. However, some of the 110 ballistic missiles managed to breach defenses, resulting in injuries to 12 individuals.
