In New Delhi, the Congress party is convening a Central Election Committee (CEC) meeting today to deliberate on potential candidates for the crucial seats of Raebareli and Amethi in Uttar Pradesh. Sources within the Congress indicate that key leaders from the Uttar Pradesh Congress and the All India Congress Committee (AICC) responsible for Uttar Pradesh, including Avinash Pandey, have been summoned for the meeting.
Previously, the Uttar Pradesh Congress had proposed to the CEC that the Gandhi family should contest from the Amethi and Raibareli constituencies. The final decision rests with the CEC and the party's top leadership. A senior party official expressed optimism about the proposal's favorable consideration.
There is strong speculation that the Congress may nominate Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi as its candidates for the Amethi and Rae Bareli constituencies, respectively. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was defeated by Smriti Irani in Amethi. Irani is once again contesting from the seat on behalf of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Robert Wadra claims widespread support to enter active politics
Significantly, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's husband, who had earlier expressed interest in contesting from the Amethi parliamentary seat, stated that there is widespread support for him to enter active politics across the country. He also criticized Smriti Irani, the incumbent MP from Amethi, for allegedly not fulfilling her promises.
"Voices from all corners of the country are urging me to join active politics, as I have always been present among the people. I have been involved in campaigning there (Amethi) since 1999. Smriti Irani, the current MP from Amethi, has failed to deliver on her commitments," Vadra remarked when asked about his potential candidacy for the Amethi Lok Sabha seat.
Rae Bareli has historically been a stronghold of the Congress party, with both Feroze Gandhi and Indira Gandhi representing it. Sonia Gandhi has been the MP from the constituency since her victory in the 2006 by-poll. With Sonia Gandhi moving to the Rajya Sabha, the Congress is likely to nominate Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who currently serves as the party's general secretary.
The Lok Sabha constituencies of Amethi and Rae Bareli are scheduled to vote in the fifth phase of the elections on May 20th.
