Lok Sabha Election-2024 Phase 5: Fate of Rahul Gandhi, Smriti Irani, Rohini Acharya to be sealed; these are other key contenders

Voters from 49 constituencies spanning across six states and two Union territories, including Maharashtra, Bihar, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Ladakh, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, will cast their votes on May 20, in the fifth phase of Lok Sabha Election-2024. This election will determine the fate of 695 candidates, including prominent ministers and MPs.

Prominent Contenders in Phase 5

Rahul Gandhi (Rae Bareli, UP)

Rahul Gandhi is representing the Congress party in the Rae Bareli constituency, a historically significant seat for the Nehru-Gandhi family previously held by his mother, Sonia Gandhi. Rahul has previously participated in the Lok Sabha elections from Kerala's Wayanad constituency, which he successfully secured in 2019. Wayanad conducted its elections during the second phase on April 26. The BJP nominated UP minister Dinesh Pratap Singh as its candidate from Raebareli.

Smriti Irani (Amethi, UP)

Amethi, a traditional Congress stronghold, saw a significant shift when BJP leader Smriti Irani emerged victorious in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, marking the end of the Gandhi family's long-standing presence in the region. In the current election, Smriti Irani is competing against Congress candidate Kishori Lal Sharma, a loyalist of the Gandhi family. This marks Irani's third electoral campaign in Amethi, following her defeat to Rahul Gandhi by a large margin in 2014 and her subsequent victory by around 55,000 votes in 2019.

Karan Bhushan Singh (Kaiserganj, UP)

Karan Bhushan Singh, the son of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, is the candidate fielded from Kaiserganj. Karan, who holds positions in the Uttar Pradesh Wrestling Association and a Cooperative Bank in Gonda district, replaces his father, who faced allegations of misconduct during his tenure as the chief of the Wrestling Federation of India. Karan, a former national Double Trap shooting player with educational qualifications from Ram Manohar Lohia Awadh University in Faizabad, brings a diverse background to his candidacy.

Rajnath Singh (Lucknow, UP)

Rajnath Singh is set to contest against Samajwadi Party candidate Ravidas Mehrotra in the upcoming elections from the Lucknow constituency. Singh secured a substantial victory in 2019 by defeating SP's Poonam Shatrughan Sinha with over 6.3 lakh votes. In the 2014 elections, he triumphed over Congress candidate Rita Bahuguna Joshi by a margin of 2,72,749 votes.

Rohini Acharya (Saran, Bihar)

Rohini Acharya, a leader of the RJD and daughter of Lalu Prasad, is contesting from Saran against BJP's Rajiv Pratap Rudy. Rudy has previously secured victories against members of Lalu Prasad's family in both the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, defeating former CM Rabri Devi and Chandrika Rai, respectively.

Chirag Paswan (Hajipur, Bihar)

Chirag Paswan, the national president of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), is a significant candidate in the Phase 5 Lok Sabha elections for Hajipur. He will be competing against RJD's Chandra Ram, following the party's historical wins in the region in previous elections.

Piyush Goyal (Mumbai North)

Union Minister Piyush Goyal is contesting from Mumbai North as the BJP's candidate, replacing the incumbent Gopal Shetty. Goyal's candidacy in this election brings a new dynamic to the constituency, with the elections scheduled for May 20. He faces competition from Congress candidate Bhushan Patil.

Ujjwal Nikam (Mumbai North-Central)

The BJP has nominated renowned lawyer Ujjwal Nikam to contest from Mumbai North-Central, replacing Poonam Mahajan. Nikam was the special public prosecutor in the Mumbai terror attack and 1993 serial blasts cases. He faces Congress leader Varsha Gaikwad in the electoral race.

Arvind Sawant (Mumbai South)

Arvind Sawant, a two-time MP and Shiv Sena UBT leader, has been chosen by the Maha Vikas Aghadi to represent Mumbai South in the upcoming elections. Sawant, who has previously won the seat under the Shiv Sena banner, is up against Yamini Jadhav, a prominent Shiv Sena leader and current MLA from the Byculla assembly seat.

Omar Abdullah (Baramulla, J&K)

National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah is a candidate in the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat contest. Abdullah is competing against candidates from the Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party and Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference in the upcoming elections.
