Arundhati Roy to be prosecuted in 2010 speech case; Delhi L-G gives sanction, see details

Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has given permission to prosecute writer Arundhati Roy and Kashmir professor Sheikh Shaukat Hussain under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act i.e. UAPA.

Sheikh Shaukat Hussain is a former professor of International Law at Kashmir Central University.

A statement issued from the office of the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi said that LG Saxena has given permission for prosecution in the FIR registered against Arundhati Roy and Dr. Sheikh Shaukat Hussain under UAPA on 29 November 2010.

This FIR was registered on the complaint of Sushil Pandit.

Statement issued by LG office said 'Separation of Kashmir from India' was promoted under the banner of a conference called 'Azadi - The Only Way' at Delhi's LTG Auditorium.

The speakers at the conference included Syed Ali Shah Geelani, SAR Geelani (anchor of the conference and prime accused in the Parliament attack case), Arundhati Roy, Dr. Sheikh Shaukat Hussain and Maoist sympathizer Varavara Rao.

It was alleged that Geelani and Arundhati Roy strongly propagated that Kashmir was never a part of India and was forcibly occupied by the armed forces of India.

The complainant provided the recording of the conference. The complainant filed a complaint before the MM Court, New Delhi under Section 156(3) of CrPC.

On this basis, an FIR was registered and investigation was taken up.

After the decision of the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi in the Arundhati Roy case, famous lawyer Prashant Bhushan has reacted.

On the social media platform X, he said, "So the LG has approved prosecution under UAPA law on a 14-year-old FIR against Arundhati Roy for advocating independence of Kashmir. It seems that the Modi government has learned nothing from the 2024 defeat. Even more determined to make India a dictatorship!"
