Why prices of tomato are skyrocketing? Will they rise further?


There is a tremendous increase in the prices of tomatoes in the country. Prices have exceeded Rs 50 per kg in 17 states. Among them, 9 states have reported prices exceeding Rs 60 per kilogram, while 4 states have prices surpassing Rs 70. 


In one state, prices have even crossed Rs 100. Experts attribute this increase to factors like heat waves and reduced tomato production. They suggest that more states may experience prices exceeding Rs 100 in the near future due to these conditions.


Most expensive tomatoes in these states


The prices of tomatoes have crossed Rs 100 in the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar. According to the data received from the website of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, on June 20, the price of tomatoes here was Rs 100.33 per kilogram. 


After that comes Kerala, where the prices of tomatoes have been seen at Rs 82 per kilogram. In Mizoram and Tamil Nadu, the price of tomato has crossed Rs 70 per kg. In Telangana, Goa, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Maharashtra, tomato is being sold at more than Rs 60 per kg. In Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Sikkim, Odisha, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Meghalaya, Tripura and West Bengal, the price of tomato has reached above Rs 50 per kg.


How much has the average price increased in the country?


According to the data of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, a good increase has been seen in the average price of tomato. In the month of June, an increase of Rs 12.46 per kg has been seen in the average price of tomato. On May 31, the average price of tomato is Rs 34.15 per kg. On June 20, the country's average price of tomato has reached Rs 46.61 per kg. 


According to experts, at present, inflation in tomato is being seen more in South India. If we talk about the North, then the price of tomato in Delhi remains at Rs 33. In the month of June, the price of tomato in Delhi has seen an increase of Rs 28 per kilogram.
