Bangladesh Anti-quota Protests: Violence continues in Bangladesh against the Supreme Court's order to restore reservation in government jobs. To control this, the government has imposed curfew across the country. The government announced the curfew late on Friday (July 19). So far 115 people have died in the violence


The army has been deployed to control the violence. Along with this, orders have been given to shoot the protesters on sight. According to the report of news agency AFP, 115 people have died in the violence so far. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has canceled her foreign tour due to the violence. She was scheduled to visit Spain and Brazil on July 21. 


978 Indian students have returned home


Amidst the growing tension in Bangladesh, so far 978 Indian students have returned home. Dhaka University has been closed till further orders. Students have been asked to vacate the hostels by Wednesday.


Many Indians living in Bangladesh are also reaching the Indian border by road. BSF DIG has said that so far 150 students have returned to India via Tripura border. The Indian government has also issued emergency phone numbers to help the Indians living there.


After the violent clashes between students and security forces on Friday, the streets in many cities are deserted on Saturday and security forces are patrolling. There are also reports of sporadic clashes at some places.


An eyewitness in Rampura of the capital Dhaka said that the police have fired bullets on thousands of protesters who came out here.


115 people have died in the violence


According to information received from hospitals, at least 115 people have died so far in the clashes between student protesters and police this week. More than 2,500 have been injured. Independent Television reported the death of 17 people on Friday alone. Somoy TV claimed the death of 30 people.


An Associated Press reporter saw 23 bodies at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital. Earlier on Thursday (July 18), there was news of the death of 22 people.


Earlier on Thursday, hundreds of protesters entered the campus of BTV office and burnt more than 60 vehicles. On the same day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave an interview to BTV. The next day, on Friday, protesting students attacked a jail in Narsingdi district. They set fire there after freeing hundreds of prisoners from the jail.


36 students are stranded: Meghalaya CM


So far 978 Indian students have returned from Bangladesh. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that Indian students have been evacuated from Bangladesh through the Dawki Integrated Check Post. About 80 of them are from Meghalaya and the rest are from other states. Some students and tourists from Nepal, Bhutan have also been evacuated.


Meghalaya CM said that about 36 students are stranded in Eastern Medical College, Bangladesh. We are in touch with the officials there. The situation in and around the college is fine. However, the parents of the students are worried about the situation there.


8,500 students in Bangladesh


The total number of Indian citizens in Bangladesh is estimated to be around 15,000, which includes about 8,500 students.


The High Commission of India in Dhaka and the Assistant High Commissions in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet and Khulna are in regular touch with more than 4000 students remaining in various universities in Bangladesh and are providing necessary assistance. Students from Nepal and Bhutan have also been assisted with their crossing into India on request.
