Bhopal is currently grappling with a significant surge in cyber crimes. Data sourced from the district cyber crime unit revealed that local residents lost a staggering Rs 30 crore to cyber fraudsters during the first six months of 2024, from January to June. Additionally, the cyber cell reported the arrest of 60 people involved in these fraudulent activities during the same period.
Cyber crooks have devised a novel scheme to deceive people
Senior officials from the cyber crime unit disclosed that these fraudsters primarily operated from Andhra Pradesh and Kerala—regions from which no such arrests had been made previously. The officials explained that the cyber crooks devised a novel scheme to deceive people by enticing them to play games with the promise of earning money. Many individuals fell victim to this trap, resulting in significant losses from their bank accounts.
Fraudsters siphon off money when people click link
The modus operandi of these criminals involved sending SMS messages to targeted individuals. Upon clicking the provided link, victims unknowingly permitted the fraudsters to siphon off money from their bank accounts. The fraudsters lured people into playing poker and betting games, further contributing to the financial losses. Besides gaming frauds, other prevalent scams included deceptive schemes involving share trading investments and OTP-based frauds.
Victims are mostly housewives and elderly people
Assistant Police Commissioner (Cyber Cell) Sujeet Tiwari told media that a significant number of victims were housewives and elderly people who were less aware of the importance of not sharing bank-related information with unknown people.
In response to the rising threat, Deputy Police Commissioner Akhil Patel emphasized the urgent need to enhance security measures within the telecom and banking sectors to better combat these escalating cyber crimes.
