Team India, fresh off their T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, has returned to India from Barbados after a 16-hour flight. The team was delayed due to storm Beryl, which had temporarily closed the Barbados airport.
Upon landing at Delhi airport, the team received a warm welcome from enthusiastic fans who had gathered to greet their heroes. The squad then proceeded to the ITC Maurya Hotel in Delhi, where they were scheduled to stay before heading to their respective homes. Reports suggest that the team is set to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi later in the day.
As soon as the flight landed in New Delhi, BCCI shared a video of the players unboxing the T20 World Cup trophy. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shivam Dube, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravindra Jadeja were seen picking up the trophy, kissing it before putting it back in the box.
The BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah, arranged a special Air India flight to bring the cricketers and their families home. The flight departed Barbados on Wednesday and arrived in Delhi on Thursday morning.
Special celebration at ITC Maurya
At the ITC Maurya, a special celebration awaited the Rohit Sharma-led squad. The hotel, located in the upscale Chanakyapuri neighborhood, had prepared a lavish breakfast and a unique cake designed in the colors of Team India's jersey. The cake featured a chocolate recreation of the T20 trophy as a tribute to the team's victory.
Chef Shivneet Pahoja, the executive chef at ITC Maurya, shared that a team of pastry chefs had worked through the night to prepare the cake. "The cake is in the color of the team's jersey. Its highlight is this trophy, which may look like an actual trophy but is made out of chocolate. This is our welcome to the winning team. We have arranged the breakfast in a special venue and will offer them a special breakfast," Pahoja said.
The breakfast menu was curated to showcase the best of Indian cuisine, including some of the players' favorite dishes like chole bhature. Reflecting ITC Maurya's commitment to sustainability, the menu also featured healthy options made with millets.
