Heavy rains lashed Delhi-NCR on Wednesday evening and night. During this, a building collapsed in Sabzi Mandi area.
According to media reports, some people are feared to be buried under the building. Apart from this, 10 flights coming to Delhi have been diverted due to heavy rains. At least 10 flights headed to Delhi, including one from Tokyo, were diverted, and vehicles were also stuck on flooded roads in some areas. Air India, Vistara, Indigo and Spice Jet have issued advisories to divert flights and check boarding status.
The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the next 24 hours. Heavy rains are expected to lash Delhi even on Thursday.
People had to face hardship for about 2 hours due to water-logging. Delhi's ITO, Connaught Place, Minto Road and Moti Bagh flyovers were flooded. Due to waterlogging in Chandni Chowk area, people had to struggle a lot in commuting. Vehicles were seen crawling in South Extension area.
Mayur Vihar in East Delhi saw 119 mm of rain between 8.30 am and 8.30 pm on Wednesday while 118 mm of rain was recorded by the National Center For Medium Range Weather Forecasting in Noida.
Schools will remain shut on on Aug 1
The Delhi government has announced that all schools will remain shut on Thursday.
"In light of very heavy rainfall today (Wednesday) evening and forecast of heavy rainfall tomorrow (Thursday) , all schools - government and private - will remain closed tomorrow," Education Minister Atishi said in a post on X.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has asked the officials to be on alert due to water-logging and take care of coaching centers.
