J&K: Escalation at LoC: Soldier Martyred, 4 Injured in Kupwara Encounter

A soldier was martyred and four others were injured during an encounter with terrorists along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district today. The Army reported that a "Pakistani person" was also killed in the exchange and confirmed the injuries to four Army personnel, including a Major rank officer.

Sources suggest the attack may have been carried out by Pakistan's Border Action Team (BAT), which has been involved in several assaults prior to the ceasefire understanding between India and Pakistan in February 2021.

"This is an aggressive action and clearly an escalation along the LoC," stated a senior officer.

This incident follows a day after 'Kargil Vijay Diwas,' where Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a stern warning to Pakistan, asserting that the Indian Army would overcome any terror challenges.

In a statement on X, the Army described the encounter as an exchange of fire with unidentified persons without naming the Pakistan Army or terrorists directly.

"There has been an exchange of fire with unidentified personnel at a forward post in Kamkari, Macchal Sector along the Line of Control. One Pakistani person has been killed while four of our soldiers have suffered injuries and have been evacuated. Operations are in progress."

The encounter, the second in Kupwara in three days, started in the district's Kamkari area following information about possible terrorist movements in the region.

Firing in Macchal Sector

An exchange of fire occurred at a forward post in Kamkari, Macchal Sector along the LoC, resulting in the death of one Pakistani person and injuries to 4 Indian soldiers who have been evacuated.

Earlier this week, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi visited the LoC in the same area to review the preparedness of the forces to counter infiltration and terrorist attacks.

Earlier on July 24, the security forces also neutralised an unidentified terrorist in an overnight gunfight with terrorists in Kupwara's Lolab area. A soldier was martyred in the gunfight.

40 to 50 Pakistani terrorists are hiding

According to sources, a group of around 40 to 50 Pakistani terrorists are reportedly hiding in the upper reaches of the hilly districts of Jammu and Kashmir, prompting security forces to launch massive counter-terror operations in these areas to catch them.

These terrorists, who have managed to infiltrate the region, are highly trained and equipped with some of the most modern and sophisticated weapons, including American-made M4 Carbine Rifles fitted with night vision devices, sources said

Amid the rising terror incidents, Prime Minister Modi chaired a review meeting last month to assess the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. He discussed the matter with Home Minister Amit Shah and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, receiving a comprehensive overview of the security situation in the Union Territory and the counter-terrorism operations being conducted by the armed forces.

Additionally, the Prime Minister spoke with Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, who briefed him on the efforts being undertaken by the local administration.

Prime Minister Modi has instructed the authorities to deploy the full spectrum of the armed forces' counter-terror capabilities.
