Rajasthan Free Electricity Scheme: The Bhajanlal government in Rajasthan is actively discontinuing several initiatives launched by the previous Gehlot administration, with the free electricity scheme being a significant target. Recently, the Bhajanlal government issued a major update on this scheme, which is set to impact lakhs of consumers.
No new beneficiaries to be added
The Bhajanlal administration has announced that no new beneficiaries will be added to the scheme providing 100 units of free electricity. This information came to light in response to a question posed by BJP MLA Radheshyam Bairwa in the assembly.
98.23 lakh consumers registered under the scheme
Energy Minister Heeralal Nagar disclosed in the assembly that the Chief Minister's Free Electricity Scheme is currently benefiting registered domestic consumers. From June 2023 to March 2024, 98.23 lakh domestic consumers registered under this scheme, and all are currently receiving its benefits. However, no new consumers will be included in the scheme, leaving some potential beneficiaries excluded.
Suspension of Free Smartphone Scheme
In addition to the changes in the electricity scheme, the Bhajanlal government has also suspended the Free Smartphone Scheme. The distribution of smartphones was halted after the assembly election code of conduct was enforced last year. The financial provision for this scheme in the fiscal year 2023-24 was Rs 1811.30 crore, of which Rs 1745.22 crore has already been spent. The future of this scheme will be determined after evaluating its benefits to women and the public interest, said the government.
