Supreme Court Extends Stay on Display of Owner & Employee Names at Food Joints Along Kanwar Yatra 2024 Route

The Supreme Court has upheld the earlier ban on requiring hotels and dhabas along the Kanwar route in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand to display the names of owners and employees.


During a hearing on Friday, the Supreme Court stated that individuals cannot be compelled to display names at food establishments. However, the court clarified that those who wish to do so voluntarily are free to proceed, as there is no prohibition against it.


The next hearing in this matter is scheduled for August 5, and the ban will remain in effect until that date.


The Supreme Court was addressing the local administrations' directive to shopkeepers, hotels, and dhabas in certain states to clearly display the names of owners and employees during the Kanwar Yatra.


On July 22, the Supreme Court had issued an interim stay on the order regarding the display of names along the Kanwar Yatra route.


Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing a petitioner in the case, informed the court that the Uttar Pradesh government had submitted a counter affidavit the previous night, and they required additional time to respond.


In response, the court bench extended the interim stay and set the next hearing date.


The Uttar Pradesh government explained to the court that these measures were implemented to ensure the Kanwar Yatra was conducted peacefully and transparently, particularly after concerns arose regarding the use of onion and garlic in food served at local shops.

Media and Entertainment sector lower downs 24% in 2020 despite last-quarter rebound

  India's media and entertainment (M&E) sector lower downed 24% to Rs1.38 trillion in 2020 due to the corona-virus pandemic. The contractions came despite a rebound in the last-quarter. The M&E sector is supposed to expand 25% to Rs1.73 trillion in 2021 and compound annual growth rate of 13.7% to Rs2.23 trillion by 2023, according to a joint report by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry(Ficci) and EY, finance consulting firm.  While advertisement revenues dropped 25% to 19,900 crore and subscriptions fell 20% to 15,400 crores. Digital advertisement remained unchanged, but print (Rs 8,400 crore) and television (Rs 6,900 crore) advertising saw the steepest declines. The only segments that rose in 2020 were digital and online gaming, which added a total of Rs 2,600 crore and their contribution to the M&E sector rose from 16% in 2019 to 23% in 2020.
