At least three people have lost their lives after several coaches of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express derailed in Gonda district, Uttar Pradesh. The rail accident has also left 30 individuals injured.
According to the Executive Director of Information and Publicity for the Railways, the loco pilot of the train reported hearing a loud bang just before the accident occurred. Further details about the cause of the derailment are still awaited, and it is hoped that more information will come to light soon.
Dr. Rashmi Verma, Gonda's Chief Medical Officer, confirmed the deaths in a conversation and said that four people are critically injured, while 30 others have sustained minor injuries.
The incident took place in Pikaura, situated between Gonda and Jhilahi. A rescue team has been dispatched to the scene for relief operations. Visuals from the site show passengers with their luggage standing along the sides of the track. The train, numbered 15904, was traveling from Chandigarh to Dibrugarh in Assam. The Central Government has ordered a high-level investigation into the incident.
A 40-member medical team along with 15 ambulances has been deployed to the site, with additional ambulances en route.

Of the 21 coaches, five AC compartment coaches derailed a few kilometers before the Jhulahi railway station. Pankaj Singh, Chief Public Relations Officer of North Eastern Railways, stated that the Katihar-Amritsar Express and Guwahati-Shrimata Vaishnodevi Katra Express have had their routes changed as a result.
"I had a close shave, glad to be safe. Don't worry, I am fine," shared a relieved passenger from the derailed train. Videos from the site depict passengers retrieving their luggage from the derailed coaches, with one coach notably flipped onto its side and some passengers standing on top of it.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma mentioned that authorities are actively monitoring the situation.
The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister’s Office released a statement acknowledging the accident. "Taking cognizance of the train accident in Gonda district, the district administration officials have been directed to reach the spot and expedite the relief work," the statement read. It further added, "The Chief Minister has instructed officials to ensure the injured are promptly taken to the hospital and receive proper treatment, and he has wished for their speedy recovery."
