Will eateries in Uttarakhand on Kanwar Yatra route also have to display names on lines of UP? What CM Pushkar Dhami & ex-CM Harish Rawat said?

Similar to Uttar Pradesh, hotels, dhabas, and street vendors offering food along the Kanwar Yatra route in Uttarakhand will also be required to display the names of their owners and employees.

This issue was brought to light on Friday when Haridwar SSP Pramod Doval made a statement regarding it. By Saturday afternoon, the Haridwar Police began enforcing this decision.

However, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that this decision had already been made a week prior.

Crores of pilgrims come to Haridwar every year

Every year, crores of pilgrims visit Haridwar in Uttarakhand to collect holy water from Har ki Paudi and Neelkanth in Rishikesh.

Last year, this figure exceeded four crores, and it is anticipated to rise this year.

Managing such a vast influx of Kanwariyas poses a significant challenge for the police and administration, and despite their best efforts, various disturbances—both minor and major—occur annually.

This is the rationale provided by the Uttarakhand government for requiring the display of names on dhabas and food carts.

Aim is not to target or harm anyone: Dhami

Addressing a press conference in Dehradun, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami claimed that this decision was taken a week ago.

He stated, "This decision was made during the meeting concerning the Kanwar fair on July 12. The rationale behind it is that many people expressed concerns that some people might open shops or conduct other businesses under different names, concealing their identities. This is not acceptable; everyone should be identifiable."

He further said, "This is not to target anyone or to harm anyone." However, not everyone agrees with the Chief Minister.

Decision promotes caste intolerance: Rawat

Former Chief Minister Harish Rawat expressed on Facebook, “Hotels, dhabas, restaurants, and street vendors along the Kanwar routes will now be required to display their full names on their establishments and the names of their employees prominently. In the 21st century, as we strive to break the chains of casteism, why implement a decision that promotes caste intolerance?”

He continued, “Our country and Hindu society have endured the scars of untouchability for centuries, with many great leaders, including Gandhiji, dedicating their lives to heal those wounds. Are the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments looking to reopen those wounds? To promote one form of untouchability over another? I urge both governments to reconsider, as you are embarking on a very perilous path.”
