A New Era in Bangladesh: What Hope PM Modi Expressed as Muhammad Yunus Took Oath as Interim Government Head

In a significant shift after 15 years of Sheikh Hasina's leadership, Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the head of Bangladesh's interim government on Thursday. This ceremony took place amidst a turbulent backdrop, as the country has experienced violence and unrest following student-led protests that resulted in Sheikh Hasina's resignation and departure on Monday.

At 84 years old, Yunus, known for his pioneering work in microcredit and microfinance through the Grameen Bank, returned to Dhaka from Paris—where he had been receiving medical treatment—just hours before his oath-taking. The oath was administered by President Mohammed Shahabuddin at the presidential residence, Bangabhaban.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted Yunus on his new role, expressing hopes for a swift return to stability in Bangladesh, which is essential for the safety of Hindus and other minority communities.

We hope for an early return to normalcy: Modi

Modi stated on X, "My best wishes to Professor Muhammad Yunus on the assumption of his new responsibilities. We hope for an early return to normalcy, ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities. India remains committed to working with Bangladesh to fulfill the shared aspirations of both our peoples for peace, security and development."

Yunus assumes the position of chief adviser, similar to that of a prime minister, supported by a 16-member advisory council. Notable members include Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmud, prominent leaders of the protests that led to Hasina's ousting.

The council also features rights activist Adilur Rahman Khan, women's rights advocate Farida Akhtar, Grameen Telecom trustee Nurjahan Begum, former foreign secretary Touhid Hossain, and AFM Khalid Hossain, deputy chief of the right-wing party Hefazat-e-Islam.

Bangladesh has got a second independence: Yunus

Before the swearing-in ceremony, Yunus remarked, "Today is a glorious day for us... Bangladesh has created a new victory day. Bangladesh has got a second independence." He emphasized the need for restoring law and order, urging the public, "If you have trust in me, make sure there will be no attacks against anyone, anywhere in the country... We are one big family."
