Madhya Pradesh (MP) is on the path to becoming a significant hub for nuclear power in India, with two major nuclear power projects set to take shape in the state. These projects promise to significantly enhance the state’s power generation capacity, potentially making MP a key player in the country’s energy sector.
The two nuclear projects planned for MP have a combined capacity of 4,200 MW. The first project will generate 1,400 MW, while the second will produce 2,800 MW. The state government has stepped up to address and remove any obstacles that may impede the progress of these projects, signaling its commitment to making MP a powerhouse of nuclear energy.
Chutka and Bhimpur: The Nuclear Powerhouses of MP
Initially, plans were made to establish a nuclear power plant in Chutka, located in the Mandla district. However, due to local opposition, the project faced significant delays and challenges.
The project, which is to be implemented by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL), has seen renewed focus, and new developments have emerged. Now, not one but two major nuclear power projects are slated to be established in the Mandla district.
The first project, located in Chutka, will have a capacity of 1,400 MW, generated from two reactors of 700 MW each. The second project, known as the Bhimpur Nuclear Energy Project, will be set up in Bhimpur, also in Mandla district. This project will have a capacity of 2,800 MW, produced from four reactors of 700 MW each.
Together, these two projects will produce a total of 4,200 MW of power, making Mandla a significant contributor to the state’s energy output. Once these projects are operational, Madhya Pradesh is expected to become a new hub of nuclear power in India.
High-Level Committee to Ensure Smooth Implementation
To ensure the smooth progress of these ambitious projects, the state government has formed a high-level committee under the chairmanship of the Additional Chief Secretary of Energy. This committee is tasked with addressing and removing any obstacles that might hinder the projects. The committee includes senior officials from various departments, such as the ACS Water Resources Department, Public Works Department, Principal Secretary Revenue Department, Commissioner Jabalpur Division, and the Collector of District Mandla.
Additionally, key members from NPCIL, including the Director of the Project, Executive Director of Commerce, and Project Directors for Chutka and Bhimpur, are part of this committee. The Chief Construction Engineer and Unit Head of the Chutka Project NPCIL will serve as the coordinator.
A Long-Term Commitment
The formation of this committee underscores the state government’s commitment to these projects. The committee has been granted extensive powers and will remain active until the projects are fully operational. Its responsibilities include overseeing land acquisition, purchase, and compensation distribution. Additionally, the committee will handle the relocation and rehabilitation of displaced families, ensuring they are resettled in appropriate colonies.
The committee is also tasked with preparing proposals for administrative and financial support and will assist in obtaining various legal approvals necessary for the implementation of the projects. These approvals include public hearings, land acquisition, forest clearance, environmental clearance, and approval from the State Pollution Control Board.
With these steps, the state government is demonstrating its dedication to transforming Madhya Pradesh into a leading center for nuclear power in the country.
