Independence Day 2024: PM Modi Advocates for Uniform Civil Code, Read What He Said?

India Independence Day 2024 : In his Independence Day address this morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi advocated for implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), asserting that laws which create division within the country have no place in modern society and must be abolished.

From the historic Red Fort, the Prime Minister said that the Supreme Court has consistently engaged in discussions and issued directives regarding the UCC. He noted that a significant portion of the population perceives the existing civil code as discriminatory and communal.

"The Constitution, the Supreme Court, and the vision of our Constitution makers all call for a uniform civil code. It is our responsibility to realize this vision," Modi emphasized.

PM Modi underscored the need for extensive public discourse and encouraged everyone to share their views. He stressed that laws which divide citizens along religious lines are outdated and incompatible with contemporary values. "Modern society demands a secular civil code that will eliminate religious discrimination," he declared.

The BJP's manifesto for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections supports the idea of a Uniform Civil Code, stating it is in the nation's best interest. Several BJP-led state governments have already begun implementing aspects of a UCC.

Given this context, the Prime Minister’s comments signal a government intent to address the UCC issue on a national scale during its current term.
