Kolkata trainee doctor rape-murder: Why did Sourav Ganguly say his statement was misinterpreted?


Former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly had given a statement in the case of rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College Hospital.


Former BCCI president Ganguly has now clarified his own statement in view of criticism on social media.


He had demanded strict punishment for the accused. His statement was in the headlines.


Sourav Ganguly spoke to the media at an event held in Kolkata on August 11. He had said that being the father of a daughter, he is deeply shocked by this incident. He had said that West Bengal and India are considered safe and no decision should be made about the entire system on the basis of a single incident.


People did not like this statement of his. They condemned it on social media. Ganguly had given this statement during an event organized at Biswa-Bangla Convention Center.


Sourav Ganguly had said, "This is very unfortunate. Strict action should be taken. This is a terrible incident. Really scary... anything is possible anywhere. This incident can happen anywhere."


He had also said, "It is wrong to think that no one is safe. Such incidents can happen anywhere in the world."

Some people criticized him on social media. After this, Sourav Ganguly has clarified his statement. He said on Sunday that his statement was misinterpreted.


Sourav said, "I don't know what my statement was interpreted to mean. I had said that this is a terrible incident. The culprits should be punished in such a way that no one can do this in future. Police and CBI are investigating it. What happened is shameful."
