The gates of several dams in Madhya Pradesh, including Kaliasot, Bhadbhada, and Tawa Dam, have been opened as a result of persistent rain overnight and continuing until Friday evening.
Previously, the gates of Bargi and other damswere also opened in response to the rainfall.
The heavy rain continues across the state, prompting the opening of the gates at Bhadbhada and Kaliasot dams. Bhopal's Upper Lake has reached its full tank level, necessitating the release of water from the gates of Bhadbhada, Kaliasot, Kolar, and Tawa Dam Itarsi, as confirmed by Tawa Dam SDO Suryavanshi.
Additionally, the irrigation department issued alerts to all villages surrounding the dam via loudspeakers and social media. Due to the severe weather, schools in Sehore were closed on Friday, with a holiday also declared for Saturday.
Water-logging in the capital
Rain has been ongoing in the capital city of Bhopal since Friday morning, varying between heavy downpours and light drizzles. This situation has highlighted issues with the Municipal Corporation's management, as many roads are flooded, causing vehicles to move at a slow pace. The drains running through the city are overflowing, leading to reports of contaminated water accumulating in lower-lying areas.
Traffic disruptions have been noted due to water-logging on roads near Bhopal Talkies, Chhola Underbridge, Nadara Bus Stand, and Subhash Nagar. Additionally, water has collected near the Ganesh temple in front of the Rani Kamlapati Railway Station Flyover on Narmadapuram Road, creating difficulties for drivers navigating the area.
Mayor opens gates of Bhadbhada after performing Puja
For the first time this monsoon season, five gates of the Bhadbhada Dam were opened on Friday morning at 9:10 AM. The gates were opened sequentially, with Mayor Malti Rai and MIC member Ravindra Yati pressing the button to initiate the process. Prior to this, officials and staff from the Municipal Corporation and the Irrigation Department conducted a ceremonial Puja.
Opening the gates of Bhadbhada allows water from Upper Lake to flow into Kaliasot Dam. Dam in-charge Harsha Jainwal said that continuous rainfall in the catchment area is contributing to rising water levels in Kolar Dam, necessitating the opening of the gates. Additionally, Pankaj Khare from the corporation's fire department mentioned that they are monitoring areas adjacent to the river and have issued alerts to the community.
