Sagar: Nine children were killed when a wall collapsed on a tent in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district on Sunday morning amid heavy rain, police said.
The deceased have been identified as Dhruv Yadav (12), Nitesh Patel (13), Ashutosh Prajapati (15), Prince Sahu (12), Parv Vishwakarma (10), Divyansh Sahu (12), Dev Sahu (12), Vansh Lodhi (10) and Hemant (10), according to officials.
Two more children also sustained injuries and have been taken to a nearby hospital, they said.
According to officials, the incident occurred around 8.30 am, with initial reports suggesting the collapse was caused by the heavy downpour last night.
Upon receiving information, senior officials and district administration authorities reached the spot.
District Collector Deepak Arya confirmed that local police and rescue teams reached the spot and launched a rescue operation.
"Nine children have died in the incident. Two others have been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment," Arya said.
Local BJP MLA and former minister Gopal Bhargava told reporters that a programme of "Parthiv Shivling Nirman" (making Shivling out of clay) was going on under a tent near the dilapidated house and a wall collapsed and fell on the tent.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed anguish over the incident and announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the families of the deceased.
"I am saddened to hear the news of 9 innocent children dying due to the collapse of the wall of a dilapidated house due to heavy rains in Shahpur of Sagar district. I have directed the district administration to provide proper treatment to the injured children," said the CM in a post on X.
PM Modi announces ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to kin of deceased
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed condolences to the kin of nine children who lost their lives after a wall collapsed in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district.
In a post on X from the Prime Minister's Office, it said, "The accident caused by the wall collapse in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh is heartbreaking. My condolences to the bereaved families of the children who lost their lives in this. May God give them strength to bear this pain. Along with this, I wish for the speedy recovery of all the injured."
PM Modi has also announced Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's Relief Fund and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
"The Prime Minister has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased in the mishap in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000," an official statement from PMO said.
Murmu expresses grief
Earlier, President Droupadi Murmu, expressed her grief over the deaths of nine children.
Taking to X, Murmu said, "I am saddened by the news of the death of many innocent children in a heart-wrenching accident in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh. I pray that God gives strength to the bereaved parents and family members to bear this pain. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured children."
A day earlier, on 3 August afternoon, four children died after a boundary wall collapsed near the private Sunrise School in village Garh of Mangawan tehsil of Rewa district. A child and a woman are undergoing treatment for injuries.
