Paris Olympics 2024: Boxer Nishant Dev missed out on medal

Boxer Nishant Dev has lost the men's 71kg boxing quarterfinal against Marco Alonso Verde Alvarez (Mexico). A win would have sealed a fourth medal for India at the Paris Olympics 2024.

Indian shooter Manu Bhaker missed out on her third medal. She finished fourth in the final. Manu lost to Major Veronica of Hungary, who won the bronze medal, in the shoot-off. 22-year-old Manu has won 2 bronze medals in this Olympics. Manu lost the 3rd/4th place elimination playoff to miss out on what would've been her third medal of the ongoing Olympics in the French capital.

In Archery, Deepika Kumari lost in the quarterfinal match in the individual category. She was defeated by Nam Soo Yeon of Korea 6-4.

Then late night Indian boxer Nishant Dev also lost the quarterfinal match of the 71KG category. He was defeated 4-1 by Marco Alonso Verde Alvarez of Mexico.

With this, India's hope of ending the medal drought of the last 16 years in men's boxing also ended.

Vijender Singh is the only medal winner in men's boxing for India. He won the bronze medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

However, in the women's category, MC Mary Kom has won the bronze medal in 2012. But in the men's category, after Vijender, we have returned empty-handed from London, Rio and Tokyo Olympics.

Nishant participated in 2021 in his first international competition

Nishant participated in the World Championship in 2021 as his first international competition.

In this, he could not get a medal after losing in the quarter-finals, but he was successful in impressing everyone with his performance in his journey till the quarter-finals.

In his journey to the quarter-finals, he made a lot of headlines by defeating Hungary's nine-time national champion Laszlo Kozak, Mauritius' two-time Olympian Laszlo Kozak and Mexico's Marco Alvarez.

Became first Indian male boxer to qualify for Paris Olympics

Nishant Dev got the Olympic quota by defeating Vasili Sovotari of Maldives in the quarter-finals of the IBA World Championship held in Bangkok in May this year.

He was the first Indian male boxer to qualify for this Paris Olympics. Earlier, only Indian female boxers had booked tickets to Paris.

During this match, everyone praised the cleverness with which Nishant Dev punched his opponent.

On winning this match 5-0, it was said that he has now become a very mature boxer. He knows very well when and what needs to be done in the match.

Developed a liking for boxing since childhood

Born in a landlord family of Karnal, Nishant developed a liking for boxing since childhood. His maternal uncle was a professional boxer in Germany.

But after watching Manoj Kumar win gold in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, he got inspired to take up boxing.

He started training under Surendra Chauhan at Karnal's Karan Stadium. His father used to wake him up at 4 am and take him for training. This continued for years. In true sense, his father also contributed to his success.

In his childhood, he used to participate in 100 and 200 meter races and skating.

There is a famous anecdote that once while participating in skating, the wheel of his skate came off but he still ran and won. This shows his confidence.
