During his Independence Day-2024 address on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed India's aspiration to host the Olympics in 2036. He sais preparations are already underway. He congratulated the athletes who represented India at the Paris Olympics 2024 and extended his best wishes to those heading to the upcoming Paralympics.
PM Modi highlighted India's capability to host significant events. He referred to the successful organization of the G20 Summit as evidence of the nation's infrastructure readiness.
"Today, we also have with us the youth who made the Indian flag fly high in the Olympics. On behalf of 140 crore countrymen, I congratulate all our athletes and players. In the next few days, a huge contingent of India will leave for Paris to participate in the Paralympics. I extend best wishes to all our Paralympians. It is the dream of India to host the 2036 Olympics, and we are making preparations for that," he stated during his address from the Red Fort.
Earlier this month, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, confirmed the plans in a written reply in Lok Sabha, as per a press release from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) selects host cities for the Summer Games through a detailed process, managed by the Future Host Commission (FHC).
India is sending its largest-ever contingent to Paris Paralympics
India aims to build on its success from the Tokyo Paralympics, where it secured 19 medals, and the historic 111-medal haul at the Para Asian Games. The country is sending its largest-ever contingent of 84 athletes to the Paris Paralympics, which begins on August 28. These athletes will compete in 12 sports, including archery, athletics, badminton, canoeing, cycling, blind judo, powerlifting, rowing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, and taekwondo.
Prime Minister Modi was warmly received by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and other dignitaries at the Red Fort. Dressed in a white kurta and blue attire, along with a traditional multicolored safa, he addressed the nation for the 11th time on Independence Day, joining the ranks of Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. This year's theme is 'Viksit Bharat @ 2047,' reflecting the government's goal to transform India into a developed nation by 2047.
