Former Bihar minister Shyam Rajak has officially parted ways with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Rajak, who held the position of national general secretary within the party, tendered his resignation on Thursday, stepping down from both his post and his primary membership in the RJD. His resignation letter was addressed to RJD's national president, Lalu Prasad Yadav, in which Rajak expressed feelings of betrayal.
Rajak's exit from the RJD comes at a crucial time, with the Bihar assembly elections looming next year. His departure has stirred the political landscape, fueling speculations that he might return to his former party, Janata Dal (United) or JDU.
Rajak had previously left JDUto join RJD
The news of Rajak's resignation was made public through a social media post. In his message, Rajak hinted at the internal party dynamics, stating that he was "not fond of chess" and had been "cheated" as others within the RJD "moved pawns" while he focused on maintaining relationships. It's worth noting that Rajak had previously left Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JDU to join the RJD ahead of the 2020 assembly elections.
Rajak was not given ticket in 2024 LS polls
Reports suggest that Rajak's discontent with the RJD leadership stemmed from not being given a ticket for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In a post-resignation interview, Rajak revealed that Lalu Yadav had lured him into the RJD before the 2020 elections with several promises. However, he felt that he faced continued injustice in 2020, 2022, and now in 2024. Rajak recounted how he sacrificed his MLA and ministerial positions with JDU to join the RJD, only to feel trapped within the party's power plays.
Before joining the RJD, Shyam Rajak served as the Industry Minister in Nitish Kumar's government. He expressed frustration over the treatment meted out to him by RJD. He said he was denied a ticket in the 2020 assembly elections from Phulwarisharif.
There were discussions about Rajak being nominated as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC), but that too did not materialize. More recently, Rajak had been preparing to contest from the Samastipur Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 elections, only to be denied a ticket yet again.
Not yet made a decision: Rajak
When asked about the possibility of rejoining JDU, Rajak stated that he had not yet made a decision but assured that he would remain active in politics. Meanwhile, insider reports suggest that Rajak is already in communication with senior JDU leaders and may soon return to Nitish Kumar's party.
