The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that the Women's T20 World Cup 2024 will no longer take place in Bangladesh, but will instead be held in the United Arab Emirates this October. Despite the venue change, the Bangladesh Cricket Control Board will still host the event, as confirmed in an ICC tweet.
The matches will take place in Dubai and Sharjah from October 3 to October 20, featuring teams from ten countries, including India and Bangladesh.
ICC CEO Geoff Allardice expressed disappointment over the relocation, stating, "It is a shame that the Women's T20 World Cup could not be held in Bangladesh. We knew that the Bangladesh Cricket Board would organize it in a grand manner," he said.
Allardice said further, "“I'd also like to thank the Emirates Cricket Board for stepping in to host on behalf of the BCB and Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe for their generous offers of support, and we look forward to seeing ICC global events in both of those countries in 2026.”
The tournament was initially set to be hosted in Bangladesh, with preparations nearly complete. However, following a student movement that escalated into violent protests against the government's reservation policies in July, the situation in the country became unstable.
Subsequently, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina traveled to India, prompting the decision to move the tournament to the UAE in light of the current circumstances. Many countries have expressed concern over security because of travel advisories by their respective governments following political turmoil in Bangladesh.
With its world-class facilities and infrastructure, the UAE is well-equipped to stage the Women's T20 World Cup-2-24. The country's growing prominence in the sport is reflected in the rise of both its men's and women's teams, each currently ranked 16th in the ICC T20I Team Rankings.
