Arvind Kejriwal to Resign Today; Who Will Be Next Delhi CM? What Lies Ahead for AAP Convener?

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is set to resign from his position today, Monday, September 17. Kejriwal has called for a meeting of the Legislature Party at his residence at 11:30 am, where the decision regarding the new Chief Minister will be discussed. Following the meeting, Kejriwal will meet Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinay Saxena at 4:30 pm to formally submit his resignation. Coincidentally, Kejriwal's resignation comes on the same day as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 74th birthday, adding an interesting twist to the political timing.

Who Will Be the Next Chief Minister of Delhi?

In the upcoming meeting with the Legislature Party, the name of the new Chief Minister will be a key focus. According to sources, prominent candidates being considered include Atishi, Kailash Gahlot, Gopal Rai, and Sunita Kejriwal. A decision is expected soon, with the new Chief Minister and cabinet members likely to be sworn in later this week. Kejriwal’s resignation has become a major talking point in political circles, as it signifies a potential shift in Delhi's political landscape.

Why Kejriwal stepped down?

There are several key factors behind Kejriwal’s decision to step down, especially after being granted bail by the Supreme Court in the Delhi liquor policy case.

Kejriwal's decision came after the Supreme Court granted him bail with stringent conditions, one of which prohibited him from entering the Chief Minister's office or signing government files. Essentially, he was left with no administrative authority despite holding the office of the Chief Minister. This limited his ability to govern effectively, making it challenging for him to function in his role, prompting his resignation.

With the Delhi Legislative Assembly's term ending in February 2025, there are only five months left before the next elections. This period is typically used by governments to announce populist policies or schemes aimed at securing electoral gains.

However, due to the restrictions imposed by the court, Kejriwal is unable to implement such initiatives. Rather than staying in power with limited functionality, he likely decided that now is the right time to resign and prepare for the upcoming elections.

Since Kejriwal’s involvement in the liquor policy case, opposition leaders, particularly from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have repeatedly called for his resignation. By stepping down, Kejriwal aims to reinforce his image as an honest politician.

What Lies Ahead for Arvind Kejriwal?

After his resignation, Kejriwal plans to focus his efforts on the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections. He will continue to serve as the national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and lead the party's efforts in Haryana, where it is contesting all 90 seats following the breakdown of an alliance with the Congress. Given that Kejriwal is originally from Siwani village in Haryana’s Sirsa district, he holds significant influence in the state.

Apart from Haryana, Kejriwal’s political focus will also extend to Jharkhand and Maharashtra, as he seeks to strengthen AAP’s foothold in these states ahead of their respective elections. His departure from the Delhi Chief Minister’s office thus marks the beginning of a new chapter in his political career, with a greater emphasis on expanding AAP's influence across India.

In conclusion, Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation marks a pivotal moment in Delhi's political scene. While his departure may raise many questions, the upcoming elections will determine whether his strategy of focusing on a message of honesty and integrity resonates with the electorate, both in Delhi and beyond.
