Israel-Hamas War: A 26-year-old Turkish-American woman, Ayşenur Ezgi, was shot and killed by Israeli forces on Friday while participating in a protest against new Jewish settlement construction in Beita, near Nablus, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
Ezgi, a dual citizen, was engaged in the demonstration organized by the International Solidarity Movement, a pro-Palestinian group, when she was struck in the head by Israeli gunfire. Local media and protest attendees have reported that Israeli soldiers were responsible for the shooting.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have announced that they are investigating the incident involving the foreign national.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called the situation "tragic," and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has condemned the incident, labeling it "barbaric."
Erdoğan expressed his condolences and criticized Israel's actions, vowing Turkey’s continued efforts to challenge Israeli policies and seek justice. The Turkish Foreign Ministry has confirmed that Ezgi was killed by Israeli soldiers in Nablus.
Erdoğan expressed his condolences on social media, stating, "I condemn Israel's barbaric attack on civilian demonstrations against occupation in the West Bank. I pray to God to grant peace to the soul of our country's citizen Ayşenur Ezgi, who lost her life in this attack."
The White House has requested an investigation, but has yet to make any formal statements on the matter. US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller indicated that Washington is urgently seeking more information about the circumstances surrounding Ezgi's death.
Ezgi, originally from Antalya, Turkey, was transported to Rafidia Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Dr. Fouad Nafa, the hospital chief, confirmed that she had been shot in the head.
