The Film Federation of India announced on Monday that Laapata Ladies has been selected as India's official entry for the 97th Academy Awards, set to take place in 2025. Directed by Kiran Rao, the film will compete in the prestigious Best Foreign Film category at the Oscars.
The film was chosen from a pool of 29 films by a 13-member selection committee led by acclaimed filmmaker Janu Barua. The diverse list of contenders included 12 Hindi films, 6 Tamil films, and 4 Malayalam films, among others. Laapata Ladies emerged as the winner, beating out a strong lineup of films.
Popular films like Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Malayalam National Award-winning Aattam and Cannes winner All We Imagine As Light were among the contenders.
Featuring the talents of Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastav, and Ravi Kishan, Laapata Ladies sheds light on the lives of women from rural backgrounds, capturing their stories with authenticity and emotional depth.
The film's nomination marks a significant moment for Indian cinema, with hopes high for its success at the global stage of the 2025 Oscars.
