MeToo movement in Malayalam film industry: What Jayasurya said about sexual harassment allegations

Actor Jayasurya has denied recent sexual harassment allegations made against him and announced his intention to pursue legal action. The allegations come amid a wave of accusations against prominent figures in the Malayalam film industry, including veteran actor Siddique and filmmaker Ranjith Balakrishnan.

Two separate cases have been filed against Jayasurya by two actors. Jayasurya has claimed that both accusations are false and has expressed his determination to clear his name through legal means.

"I have decided to move forward with this legally. My legal team will be looking after the rest of the proceedings regarding this case," Jayasurya stated in an Instagram post. He expressed frustration over the ease with which false accusations can be made, saying, "False allegations are easy to make for anyone who lacks a conscience. I only hope people realize that facing a false accusation of harassment is just as painful as the harassment itself."

Lie always travels faster than the truth

Jayasurya also emphasized his belief that the truth will eventually emerge, despite the rapid spread of falsehoods. "A lie always travels faster than the truth, but I believe truth will prevail. All the legal proceedings to prove my innocence will continue. I have complete faith in our judicial system," he added. Jayasurya went on to thank his supporters while noting the emotional toll the situation has taken on him, especially around his birthday.

Minu Muneer is among those who have accused Jayasurya

Actor Minu Muneer is among those who have accused Jayasurya of sexual misconduct. She also named actor M Mukesh in her accusations. Muneer described a troubling encounter that allegedly took place during the shooting of a film in 2013.

In a statement to the media, Muneer recounted, "I had a bitter experience while shooting for a film. I had gone to the toilet, and when I came out, Jayasurya hugged me from behind and kissed me without my consent. I was shocked and ran out." She further claimed that Jayasurya had offered her more roles in exchange for spending time with him.

Many actresses made serious allegations against the actors

The allegations against Jayasurya are part of a broader reckoning within the Malayalam film industry. After the Hema Committee report came out, many actresses made serious allegations against the actors.

For the last several years, there were allegations of sexual exploitation of female artists in the Malayalam film industry. To investigate this, a 3-member committee was formed in 2019 under the chairmanship of retired Justice Hema. After 4 years, on August 19, the Hema Committee submitted a 233-page report to the Kerala government, in which exploitation by many big artists came to light.

Since the Justice Hema Committee report came out, actresses in the Malayalam film industry have been continuously accusing many big actors and filmmakers.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the case against Jayasurya will be closely watched, given the broader context of sexual harassment allegations shaking the Malayalam film industry. The outcomes may set a precedent for how such cases are handled within the entertainment sector in Kerala.
