Cyclone Dana: Alert in Odisha, W Bengal, evacuation begins, trains cancelled, schools, colleges closed, see updates


Cyclone Dana Updates: The governments of Odisha and West Bengal have issued an alert about Cyclone Dana, which is expected to arrive on October 25. The India Meteorological Department has reported that wind speeds may reach between 100 and 120 km/h. In response to this threat, schools have been closed in both states, and residents are being relocated to safer areas. The coastal regions are anticipated to experience heavy rainfall during the cyclone's landfall, raising concerns about potential flooding.


Rescue teams have reached 


Rescue teams, including personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have reached both the states and educational institutions have been shut in vulnerable areas. IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that Odisha is likely to be the most affected, with heavy to very heavy rainfall and high-speed winds.


The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) said that it is on high alert, with its dedicated personnel and assets ready to provide assistance, rescue and relief.


The ICG has deployed helicopters and remote operating stations at Haldia in West Bengal and Paradip in Odisha to broadcast regular weather warnings and safety advisories to fishermen and mariners.


Over 10 lakh people to be relocated in Odisha


Evacuation in Odisha: 14 districts of Odisha like Puri, Cuttack, Balasore and Ganjam have been put on high alert. The state government has planned to move more than 10 lakh people from more than 3,000 villages to safer places. 


West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also reviewed the preparations in her state. She has set up special relief camps in coastal areas, where water, food and medicines have been arranged.  Amidst these preparations, the local administration is also constantly alert.


Trains canceled


198 trains passing through Odisha have been canceled in view of the storm. These include major trains like Tirunelveli to Shalimar Special and Bhubaneswar to Rameswaram. The East Coast Railway has advised passengers to be cautious and requested to avoid unnecessary travel. The suspension of train services has added to the difficulties faced by travelers, particularly for those who had plans to journey during the festival season.


Schools, colleges closed for 2 days


Schools and colleges have been closed in many districts of Odisha and West Bengal due to the storm. The Odisha government has ordered to keep all educational institutions closed in 14 districts from 23 to 25 October. Schools will also remain closed in seven districts in West Bengal. The purpose of this decision is to ensure the safety of the students, as life can be badly affected due to strong winds and heavy rains.


IMD's advisory for fishermen 


Fishermen advisory: The Indian Meteorological Department has advised fishermen not to go to sea for the next three days. From October 23, the speed of winds in the sea will be 60 km / h, which can gradually increase to 120 km / h. This warning has been issued for the safety of fishermen, as sea conditions can be dangerous. The state government has also instructed fishermen to return to safe places.


States geared up for relief and rescue operations


The governments of Odisha and West Bengal are fully prepared for relief and rescue operations. More than 5,000 relief centers have been set up in Odisha, where food, water and medical facilities will be available for the people. (Relief centers in Odisha) Pregnant women and children are being shifted to hospitals with special attention. Special preparations have also been made at Kolkata airport so that any emergency can be dealt with.
