India Announces 15-Member Squad for New Zealand Test Series; Jasprit Bumrah Appointed Vice-Captain But These Players Will Miss Out

The Indian cricket team for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand, starting on October 16, has been officially announced. A 15-member squad has been selected, and four additional players have been named as traveling reserves.

A notable highlight is the appointment of Jasprit Bumrah as vice-captain. This decision has drawn attention as the Indian team did not have a designated vice-captain during their recent two-match series against Bangladesh. Speculation suggests that the BCCI is grooming Bumrah to eventually take over as captain of the Test side once Rohit Sharma steps down.

Key Absences Due to Injuries: Shami and Dayal Miss Out

Veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami has not been included in the squad, as he is still recovering from an ankle injury. Shami underwent surgery earlier this year and has been sidelined since the 2023 ODI World Cup final. His absence is a significant blow to India’s pace attack, but the team will have to manage without him for the time being.

Another pacer, Yash Dayal, who was part of the Indian squad for the Bangladesh series, has also been ruled out of the New Zealand series due to injury. These absences present challenges for India’s bowling department, but they have a strong contingent of pacers who will look to fill the gap.

First Test in Bengaluru

The New Zealand team is touring India for a three-match Test series, with the first match scheduled to take place in Bengaluru from October 16. This series will be a crucial one for both teams, as they aim to strengthen their position in the ICC Test rankings.

India’s Strong Batting Line-up

India’s batting line-up for the series looks formidable. The team will be led by Rohit Sharma and includes key players such as Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant. These experienced batsmen form the core of the Indian side, providing stability and firepower.

In addition to the regulars, the selectors have also included talented youngsters like Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel in the squad. Both players have been in excellent form in domestic cricket and will add depth to India’s batting options.

All-Rounders and Spin Department

India’s all-rounders, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, have been named in the squad as well. Their inclusion not only strengthens the team’s spin attack but also adds depth to the lower order batting. Both players have a proven track record in home conditions, and their experience will be crucial against a competitive New Zealand side.

The first Test will be an exciting start to the series, as fans look forward to seeing how the Indian team performs with its new leadership and dynamic squad.
